Church of Maria SS del Rosario

Piazza Ventimiglia, Montelepre

Location

The church of Maria SS del Rosario, known as the Chiesa Madre, stands in the historic center of the town.

The building was built in 1685 by master Casimiro Demma of Carini commissioned by Raffaele Bellacera.

Over the centuries, the church has been enlarged and remodeled several times until 1886.

The external façade, built around the end of the nineteenth century, has four Chiesa Maria columns surmounted by capitals of a composite order (Doric and Corinthian elements).

At the top SS del Rosario we can see a stained glass window depicting the Madonna Chiesa Madre del Rosario (donated by Don Giuseppe Terranova) and four stat- ues depicting Moses, San Pietro, San Luca and San Paolo.

In the external side elevation there is a clock dating back to 1885 and a sculture representing an eagle.

In June 2015, the side entrance door was embellished with a bronze cladding donated by the Saputo family.

The plan of the church is a Latin cross with three naves and ten chapels.

At the height of the central nave we find the oldest of the wooden sculptures: the SS. Crucifix, patron of the village.

Proceeding with an overview of the church, in the aisles on the right and on the left we find paintings and wooden scultures made between the sixteenth and nineteenth centuries.
